On-post family housing
If you live in privatized family housing on Fort Stewart, report leaks and water damage to your housing maintenance office first. The housing company is generally responsible for the structure, and they dispatch their own contractors for on-post homes. Use the housing work-order line for emergencies, and photograph everything for your records.
Your personal belongings, however, are typically not covered by the housing company. Renters insurance covers furniture, electronics and clothing; check with your insurer and, for some situations, the installation claims office.
Off-post rentals and homes
Many soldiers live off-post in Hinesville, Flemington and Allenhurst. If you rent, notify your landlord or property manager in writing right away โ Georgia landlords are responsible for repairs, but you should still take reasonable steps to limit damage. If you own, call for restoration immediately and notify your insurer.
PCS and deployment tips
- Before deploying or a PCS move, show a spouse or trusted friend where the water shutoff is.
- Consider a smart leak sensor near the water heater and washer.
- If the house will sit empty, set the thermostat to control humidity and ask someone to check it weekly.
- Keep a digital inventory of belongings for any claim.
